Carleton University Case Study

Multiple classroom-based projects

The case study based at Carleton University is led by Dr. Sujit Sur, Associate Professor, Management, at the Sprott School of Business, and is focused on building relationships through community-engaged learning in the classroom. Students are developing relationships with community partners through course-based projects in different classes.

One group of students is connecting with community partners within a multi-disciplinary Master’s level course on climate change, with students from faculties spanning engineering, environmental science, policy and business. For example, students are working with the City of Ottawa to examine their Climate Change Action Plan and propose additional localized initiatives. In another example, undergrad business students in a course about sustainability and climate change are using business concepts to develop sustainability initiatives for NGOs, government agencies or private corporations. Dr. Sur notes that the development of respectful and reciprocal relationships has emerged as a key aspect of building resilience into climate change efforts and partnerships. The classroom offers an ideal context for building collaboration, as community partners enjoy sharing their expertise with students and are often very receptive to student ideas.
