Community-Campus
Responses to Crisis:
Community engagement and networked learning for climate change resilience

The University of Regina, Community Campus Engage Canada, and community engagement teams
from 15 post-secondary institutions across Canada are working together to explore:
how to support community efforts to adapt to climate change;
how to support community-campus boundary spanners in these efforts; and
how to leverage a national Knowledge Sharing Network
to support greater climate change resilience in communities.
This project is supported by a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council
(SSHRC) Partnership Development Grant.

Project Update:
Upcoming activities & outputs
As we near the final stage of the project, we have several activities and outputs planned that will bring together the many conversations across our Knowledge Exchange Network, case study results, and cross-case analysis – these include:
- panel discussion, policy brief, podcast, and academic article that highlight boundary spanner needs and experiences in CCE
- academic articles: climate change and CCE; review of literature on PSI involvement in community disaster response
- promising practices guide: adapting to climate change through community-campus partnerships

What our project partners have shared:
“Once you have different stakeholders everybody has slightly different expectations of what is climate change and what is climate action. So there are nuances in understanding the issues, there are nuances in accepting the way forward.”
“I know that there’s a ton of time spent just like, going to community events and talking to people, and sending emails to connect and making phone calls that like, you’re asking about people’s kids, right? Like, how’s your dog? And so all of that stuff is so crucial to building a meaningful human relationship… It’s the emotional labour of academia. It’s not recognized. It’s not valued, but it’s so important.”
“I think [community and academic partners] are always reframing and adjusting and learning. We always say we move at the speed of trust… It has to be really reflective in our practice, so that we can acknowledge those things and then make adjustments.”

Growing Connections, Understanding & Action
The Community-Campus Responses to Crisis project builds on relationships and learnings from our earlier project titled “Seizing the Moment: Exploring just and sustainable pandemic recovery through community-campus partnerships“, which was generously supported by a SSHRC Connection Grant.
